Worry looks around. Faith looks up.

Two weeks ago it was about 7am and I was getting ready for work. Anybody who has kids understands that perhaps the only “relaxation” we get during the day is that precious hour to get ready while everyone else is getting their beauty sleep. While I was in the bathroom I heard my 2-year-old suddenly start screaming “MOMMY, MOMMY, MOMMY, MOOOOOOOOOOMMY!” It was one of those blood-curdling cries, where you can hear every ounce of desperation shattering your ear drums. Due to my motherly reflexes, I dropped my hair straightener (almost into the toilet – opps!) and ran to grab her from her bed. Now, judging by the way she was yelling I was expecting to see her somehow bleeding from somewhere or missing her left arm at least. I scoop her up and before I can even start to examine her, she just looks up at me with her sleepy eyes and smiles and lightly says “Hi mommy.” Then the little turd fell fast asleep in my arms.

Am I the only one who ever feels like that with God? Sometimes all the worries in life drowns out the voice of our faith and we are the ones left screaming and pleading to God with desperation. Whether we’re facing addiction, financial hardships, death, guilt, etc. we all at least once cry out “God, where are you? Why did you leave me?”

But just like any good daddy, He will always come to our rescue. He will run to us and wrap His arms around us until we have calmed back down. I find my comfort in Matthew 28:20 “..And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” When I feel like I’m wandering aimlessly by myself or that God must have taken the day off, Scripture tells me that my God is never away from me. I always have Him, I am always protected and He is always leading my way. Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Just as Brinley fell back asleep as soon as she felt the warmth of her mother, the same happens when we call on Jesus. We feel at peace with ourselves again, we feel rejuvenated and we can feel hopeful. The only one who can truly calm the heart is the one who created it, and we can rest on His promise that He will always be there.
